Whelping is a very special and important time for both mother and puppies. We take great care to ensure each mother is calm, comfortable, and well cared for throughout the birthing process. During the first 24 hours, we handle the puppies as little as possible so they can bond with their mother, learn her scent, and nurse without interruption. Around days 2–3, dewclaws are removed from all puppies, as these claws can easily catch on objects later in life and potentially cause injury.
Weeks 1–4
During the first four weeks, puppies remain with their mother full-time while she serves as their primary caregiver. We closely monitor both mom and puppies to ensure they remain safe, healthy, and thriving. They are provided with a quiet, private space where they can grow and develop comfortably.
At approximately two weeks of age, puppies begin opening their eyes and experiencing the world around them. By week three, they start standing, gaining coordination, and exploring a slightly larger—but still secure—space. Throughout this stage, we gently introduce them to human interaction through regular affection and handling. By week four, the puppies are becoming more active, playing with one another, and continuing to build strength and confidence. They also receive their first deworming at four weeks of age.
Weeks 5–8
Between weeks five and eight, puppies enter an exciting stage of learning and social development. They begin using a doggy door to access a small grassy play area, where they are introduced to potty training outdoors. During this time, we also expose them to a variety of new experiences and environments to help build confidence and adaptability. Puppies are introduced to toys, different rooms and surfaces, and frequent interaction with both adults and children.
At five weeks, we begin introducing solid food using Purina One Puppy Chow. By six weeks, puppies are mostly weaned and eating dry food independently. We also begin separating them from their mother overnight to encourage independence and confidence. During the day, puppies spend time individually and in small groups to help them develop healthy social skills and become comfortable apart from their littermates. A second deworming is administered at six weeks.
At seven weeks, puppies begin sleeping individually or in small groups at night to further prepare them for transitioning into their new homes. By eight weeks, puppies are typically confident, well-socialized, and making excellent progress with potty training. Each puppy receives a thorough examination by a licensed veterinarian, along with all age-appropriate vaccinations and deworming. At this point, they are ready to join their forever families.
Weeks 12 & 16
At both 12 and 16 weeks of age, puppies should receive follow-up veterinary examinations and additional vaccinations as recommended. If the puppy remains in our care, we ensure these appointments are completed. If your puppy has already gone home with you, we encourage you to continue their veterinary care schedule with your trusted veterinarian.
Our goal is to raise healthy, happy, and well-socialized puppies that are fully prepared to become beloved members of your family. We devote a great deal of time and care to helping each puppy feel comfortable in a variety of situations and environments. Every puppy develops a unique personality, and it is a joy to watch those personalities blossom—especially between five and eight weeks of age.
